Submission through the contact form is the best way. Alternatively, emailing me directly at ashleyhughesphotography@outlook.com works as well. Breastfeeding and fresh 48 sessions are considered booked once you have paid your non-refundable $75 session retainer. For birth collection to be booked, a non-refundable session retainer of $300 is due at the time of booking.
The earlier, the better. Most families book their birth session during the second trimester, though bookings are welcome anytime between 12 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.
If you're further along, don't hesitate to reach out. I gladly accept last-minute clients whenever my schedule allows. Because births booked between 37 and 40 weeks may not allow for full on-call availability, a discounted last-minute rate is available.
Unlike a standard photoshoot, a birth photographer is on call 24/7 around your due date. That means not being more than 20 minutes away from home at any given time, cancelling personal plans, working overnight hours, and being ready to leave at a moment’s notice—often for long, unpredictable periods of time. Births can last anywhere from a couple of hours to well over a day, and the photographer must be fully present and available throughout.
When you compare it to other major life events—like weddings—it’s actually very similar in scope. Both require full-day (and often overnight) availability, equipment, editing time, and a high level of responsibility for documenting once-in-a-lifetime moments.
Beyond the day itself, there is also significant behind-the-scenes work: client communication, on-call readiness for weeks, travel, editing, and careful handling of deeply personal imagery.
Most importantly, birth photography preserves a moment that can never be repeated—the first time you meet your baby. For many families, that makes it one of the most meaningful investments they will ever make.
I currently accept cash and e-transfer.
At this time, I'm accepting birth photography clients in Chilliwack and Abbotsford, BC. I document births at Chilliwack General Hospital, Abbotsford Regional Hospital, and home births within these communities.
Limiting my coverage area allows me to provide reliable on-call availability and arrive as quickly as possible when labour begins, so you can feel confident knowing I'll be there to document your birth story.
Yes. To reserve your birth window, a $300 non-refundable retainer is required at the time of booking. This secures your due date and is applied toward your total collection fee.
Interest-free payment plans are available, allowing families to spread payments out leading up to their due date. The remaining balance must be paid in full by 37 weeks of pregnancy.
Please note that images will be delivered once the balance has been paid in full.
My goal is to keep the process as simple and stress-free as possible, ensuring everything is taken care of before your baby arrives so you can focus on what matters most.
Professional birth photographers are trained to work quietly and respectfully. They typically blend into the background, avoid interfering with medical staff, and focus on documenting events as they naturally unfold. You won't even know I'm there!
I have never been denied entry into a delivery room by staff, howeverer each doctor, midwife and hospital has their own policy for photography and the number of people allowed in a room at any given time. Before booking, I strongly suggest that you get permission from the care provider.
Hospital policies vary, so it's important to discuss this possibility before your due date. If I am not allowed in with you, I will document the moments up to your delivery and if they're comfortable, send in with a ready-to-shoot camera with your support partner. Once your baby has been delivered and you two are out of recovery, I will continue shooting for one hour to get bonding, etc. as I would with any other delivery.
Only if you would like them to be. Every family's comfort level is different and your preferences will be discussed prior to your birth so your experience is documented in a way that feels comfortable and respectful.
I have never missed a birth. However, babies have a way of making their own plans and occasionally labour can progress much faster than expected. This is why communication is so important.
As soon as you think you may be in labour—day or night—please call and message me and continue to keep me updated via text as things progress. This allows me to prepare and get to you as quickly as possible once active labour begins.
In the rare event that labour progresses too quickly for me to arrive in time, I will still join you as soon as possible and remain for up to two hours postpartum to document your baby's first moments and your first hours together. You will also receive a complimentary Fresh 48 session, ensuring you still have beautiful and meaningful photographs of this special chapter of your story.
Every birth is different and there is no typical timeline. I have attended births that been as quick as two hours and births as long as 18 hours.
If your labour is progressing slowly, I will remain available and work around your space, comfort, and needs. In some situations, I may step away to rest nearby so I can return refreshed and continue documenting your birth with the care and attention it deserves. When things pick back up call me and I will return to continue capturing your story.
My priority is always to be present, calm and ready to support your birth story as it unfolds, no matter how long the journey takes.
Your body has carried and nurtured life and that story deserves to be honoured. While minor temporary distractions may be edited, I believe in preserving the authenticity of this season and will never alter your body without your request.
